Introduction
Divination,
taken from its root word "divine," means to seek knowledge and information
from spiritual or divine sources. From the earliest sources of recorded
history, there have been thousands upon thousands of people the world over
with verifiable skill in determining facts about other people and things
with the assistance of divination. There are literally hundreds of different
forms of divination, each with its strengths and weaknesses. Some people
like to believe that divination and psychic ability is something that one
must be born with. However, it has been my logical belief that everyone,
given the discovery of their natural talent, can experience great success
in at least one form of divination so long as there is belief in it.
It is my
highest recommendation to all who start out on the path of magick that
divination, in some form or another, be the first thing you learn. You
will encounter few greater ways of seeking guidance than the ability to
sense it for yourself. Divination is truly an invaluable tool to the aspiring
magician.
Basics
The first
thing you must acknowledge is that there are literally hundreds of different
types of divination. You can perceive spirits and spiritual premonitions
using any one of your five conventional senses (sight, hearing, touch,
taste, smell). Therefore, any one of these senses can be extended into
the spirit world using any of their relative forms of divination. For example,
the ouija board is a form of spirit contact divination that uses your sense
of touch. Dowsing with rods or a pendulum also uses your sense of touch.
However, scrying on a crystal ball, mirror, or water uses your sense of
sight.
It is important
to note that, no matter what form of divination you use, your divination
tools (i.e. runes, tarot cards, crystal ball, etc.) have no divination
power of their own. The power lies within you and your mind. The answers
come from your mind, not your tools. The tools are only meant to help you
focus. This is why you will find it very difficult to be accurate if you
practice while reading a book or instructions on the subject. If you practice
tarot, you cannot read the meanings of each card from a book while you
do readings. You will not be as accurate! When you see a card, the first
feeling or image that comes to your mind is the correct response. This
reflects your instincts and intuition, which is the foundation of psychic
ability.
Tools
Your tools
are whatever helps you to focus and clear your mind so that it can be used
to read people. Your tools depend greatly on the form of divination you
practice. If you practice tarot or cartomancy, you use cards. If you practice
cleromancy, you use runes. If scrying is your field, you use a crystal
ball, mirror, or cup of water. However, as I mentioned before, these tools
have no power on their own. The most important tool is your mind. It must
be completely and entirely clear in order to focus toward a given subject.
Impressions
Out of
all forms of divination you'll ever find, there is but one constant that
lies at the heart of divination's deepest secret. You'll find it applied
to at least one of your conventional senses no matter what form of divination
you use. That secret is relaxation. I can't stress this enough. You will
not be able to focus on reading the subtle impressions properly if your
mind and body are not completely clear and relaxed. I highly recommend
meditation as a regular practice if you seek skill in divination.
Impressions
are the subtle signs and reactions that you feel when you see a person,
hear them speak, or feel their touch. You don't have to be a professional
psychic to know things about people based on the sound of their voice,
body language, or a jittery handshake. Divination helps you to sense accurate
details from even the most subtle of impressions, even if the person is
not within your presence.
Misconceptions
"People who practice divination
know everything or can tell you anything about your personal life."
This is NOT true! We only know some things about the impressions we are
getting from you. Some psychics are attuned enough to get great details
from the most subtle impressions, but they still can only get what they
receive.
"People who practice divination
always know what is going to happen next." Wrong! This is not true.
Most psychics, like myself, have a life and we don't focus on the future
at all times. I don't know what is going to happen next because I don't
really care unless I think some foresight could be useful to me.
"Divination, when mastered,
makes you all-knowing." Never!! To my knowledge, no one lives long
enough to gain that kind of accuracy or detail. If you're a compassionate
practitioner, then you'll likely discover your own path to wisdom, but
you'll probably never be all-knowing. That is just a cruel fact of mortality.
"People who practice divination
should be able to give lottery numbers." I wish! Unfortunately, that's
a level of accuracy that neither I nor any of my colleagues have ever reached.
In addition, reading people and reading a machine that randomly draws numbers
is somewhat different.
"People who practice divination
can read for themselves." Sometimes, this is true. It depends greatly
on the reader and his/her ability to remain focused and open to the result
of the reading. In order to get accurate results in any reading, the reader
must be 100% open to whatever the result might be. This becomes very difficult
when the reader wants a reading to go a certain way. For this reason, many
readers not only don't read for themselves, but they also don't read for
close friends or relatives.
